Urban violence in the ancient world

  • I bought a pack of the Roman Citizens at Phalanx. They are for the Gangs of Rome rules but will of course fit in with Slave Revolt armies. I checked out the Gangs rules set but I'm not really caught by that expensive (£5) mini plus card etc marketing scheme so I checked out other rules. Song of Shadows and Dust seemed pretty good from reviews so I bought a set. If anyone is interested we can give them a go some time. We have all the terrain and minis we need already.

I knew they were the right set of rules when I saw they had Poultry and Irritable Mule rules ( they must have been thinking about you Dave).

Speaking of minis here are some of the Roman Citizens made up and some kitbash ones ( mixed with Andys prints).

Hate to say it but I now have more Slave minis than will fit in a 10 litre box!

Alan was a big fan of the A Song of rules system and we played it in 15mm and it was fun, and at the club I go to now in Leeds we occasionally play Advanced A Song Of Blades and Heroes in 28mm. Also play alot Of Gods And Mortals which is an Osprey one but by the same person who came up with the rules system. I recently got the French Indian War version as I want to build up a couple of forces gradually to then play Rebels & Patriot games

  • Played Song of Blades and Heroes and it's sci-fi equivalent a number of times in 15mm. It's a good ruleset. I'd be up for that. Not sure about the livestock though.

Yes, I thought I'd heard of 'Song of' rules before though I never actually tried them. They look a fairly playable rules set. There's quite a lot of scope for individual mini characterisation, a nice activation mechanism, melee and morale looks OK. Definitely worth a try.

  • They are a mix of Gangs of Rome with bits like heads and some arms from old Factory bits. The officer is a second hand metal I bought somewhere.

These minis give 300pts which is a standard size force. If I was going for a bigger force I could add in the Lictors for example.
