Ancients Lion Rampant

  • I read through the articles Bryan found and they had some good points in them but what if we were to try out via gaming some simple as possible rules adaptations and then write them up as an article for publishing by ourselves ?

We would need to cover the things that were unique to ancient warfare- Command is different to mediaeval warfare. Pike and LTS phalanx, Roman maniples and pilum, warband, elephants and chariots/scythed chariots.

We'll have forces for most of these (except the Romans) which I have but unpainted.

  • Yes. The infantry would not have the Green or Vet option as everyone mixed in together but the cavalry would probably be eith Regular or Vet as some of the German nobles were cav, same for the Gauls. So the Germans / Gauls would have warband, cav and skirmisher but their warband is just one type - 'regular'.

The Romans for eg when hard pressed threw inexperienced legions together, same with Carthage in 3rd Punic war and their Citizen forces so those types could have Green or Regular or Vet units as the whole unit would be the same quality.

The Romans & others however did have standard inf sized units so they couldn't be large or small but that is a variant that the warbands could be as smaller tribes put up smaller fighting forces etc.
