Otranto 1480

  • Came across a comittee game in an old copy of Arquebusier. Basically its 6 or 7 players and a secretary (umpire) each player representing an Italian city state. Despite being all in the same country they don't all like each other in fact some hate each other though there are also some shaky alliances. Into this nest of vipers come the superpower of the renaissance the Ottoman Turks. They have seized the port of Otranto committed atrocities including trying to forcibly convert 800 citizens to Islam. All chose death when offered the choice of conversion or death. With the example of 800 martyrs to stir them on and the Ottomans gathering to strike at the heart of christendom (Rome) the quarelling city states have to get together and make a plan to oust the Turks. Problem is they still are riven by intrigue and factionalism.

Each player is a city state, they have their own breifing that details their alliances, emnities and how they can score points. They can plot, scheme, lie, exaggerate amongst themselves. Then we arrange to meet by Zoom. This represents the meeting under truce held in the Vatican where all parties gathered to agree the way forward (and not kill each other). There must be a crusade to oust the Turk but each city state must ensure it does best out of the crusade. We'd have one Zoom meeting with the option to convene a break and have a final Zoom meeting.

If there are sufficient people interested I'll pull together the briefings and allocate states to players and send them their briefings. All players have to do is lie , bluster and bluff amongst each other (sounds like a normal club night) and agree to meet by Zoom at a set date time.

Let me know if you are interested. Zoom worked well last week.

Best of all for certain players there's no dice rolling!
