I was thinking about potential campaign detail. I've been listening to Fall of Rome podcast - there's a few fall of Rome/Empire type podcasts out there but I really like this one. It's well researched and presented and worth checking out.
The Fall of Roman Britain episode gave me the idea of the players starting off as minor nobles, each on a small estate/holding within their own factions lands. In an increasingly chaotic world with Pax Romana no more than a memory from half a lifetime ago there are opportunities for men with ambition and a strong sword arm.
We'll randomize the scenarios so they'll nearly all be minor actions 750 - 1000pt games early on as the nobles build up their glory and status. There will be a small chance of the character being called by his liege lord to be part of a bigger army for a large scale battle but that'd be unlikely,
As reputation grows it feeds status and the minor noble becomes a key figure at his Lords hall. Eventually if the Gods smile on him he will come to rule his factions lands and at that point lead his forces in a campaign of conquest of the other factions (who may be strong enough to meet the challenge head on or may need alliances to face the onslaught).
The map shows the rough areas of northern Britain where it all takes place but it isn't map based campaign, it just helps with the setting.
As an example of the Romano British:-
The minor noble is a Decurio but gets one skill and is +25pts as AG. His 1000pt army list is as follows
Up to 20% characters (but only Decurios and only the leader can have a skill), One can be the ASB for +15pts.
up to 33% Commitatus
up to 10% Milites
up to 60% Pedyt
up to 10% Rustici
The opposing factions are Saxons/ Welsh/ Scots-Irish/ Picts and Bacaudae (bandits, apparently Britain was one of the more lawless provinces at that time).
If on his first game he was fighting Irish raiders it wouldn't be Ian's Irish, They'd be doing their own version of this in their own area. So whoever was in that week could play Irish in that game and the forces would be equally muted.
After a bit of muscle flexing against raiders, bandits, foreign settlers the Romano Brit is looking like a good candidate to lead more of his people. He may fight another Romano Brit minor noble so each minor character may even fight opposition from his own faction as well as the other factions.
As the glory/reputation builds up (hopefully) the leader has access to other characters a bigger army list and more character traits and moves in this instance from Decurio to Tribune.
Let me know if this sounds like what everyone would be interested in. With this sort of format we could have a longer or shorter campaign.
